MEET DR. AVELINA
I provide comprehensive care across the entire landscape of reproductive mental health. While I hold advanced training in maternal medical trauma and grief recovery, I work daily with women navigating every stage of the family-building journey—including infertility treatments, IVF stress, pregnancy anxiety, miscarriage loss, and postpartum transitions.
I am a licensed clinical health psychologist specializing in reproductive and perinatal health, here to support you through fertility challenges, loss, or parenthood.
More about Dr. Avelina
My mission is to empower women through grief, trauma recovery, and personal growth during the family-building journey. Having experienced my own pregnancy complications, preterm birth, and NICU stay, I bring both professional dedication and deep personal empathy to my warm, collaborative, and structured therapeutic style. These experiences added a new layer of personal passion to my professional passion for this work. I am honored to hold space for my clients’ stories to support them in their growth and healing.
My Approach
I provide evidence-based, client-centered therapy for women navigating reproductive and perinatal transitions, including infertility, miscarriage, pregnancy, and postpartum. My style is warm, collaborative, and directive, helping my clients feel both supported and guided during times that can feel uncertain or overwhelming.
I empower clients to move through challenging life experiences with greater self-awareness, emotional stability, and confidence, so they can feel more grounded and like themselves again.
In the early sessions, I take time to understand your story and create a personalized plan tailored to your needs. Our work together may include:
Learning to cope with difficult emotions and intrusive thoughts
Processing grief, loss, or past trauma
Navigating relationship and family stressors
Developing tools to feel more present, connected, and in control
Throughout the process, therapy is tailored to your unique experience—whether you are navigating fertility challenges, pregnancy loss, or the transition into parenthood—so you can move forward with clarity, support, and resilience.
Areas of Expertise
Infertility, Pregnancy and Infant Loss, and Miscarriage
I have specialized expertise supporting individuals navigating fertility challenges, IVF stress, miscarriage, pregnancy loss, and infant loss. I help clients process grief, manage uncertainty, and develop strategies to cope while moving forward with hope and resilience.
Advanced Trauma Recovery
I provide evidence-based therapy for clients recovering from traumatic experiences, including childbirth trauma and other reproductive-related stressors. My approaches include Narrative Exposure Therapy (NET), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Prolonged Exposure (PE) to help clients process trauma and regain emotional balance.
Perinatal Mental Health
Pregnancy, postpartum, and the perinatal period can be joyous but also overwhelming. I support birthing parents navigating perinatal depression, anxiety, panic attacks, post-traumatic stress (PTSD), and obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), helping them feel steadier and more connected during this transformative time.
Coping with Reproductive Health Challenges
I work with clients facing endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS), pelvic pain, gynecologic conditions, and other reproductive health concerns, providing practical strategies and emotional support to navigate these challenges without feeling alone.
Education & Professional Background
I have been passionate about women’s mental health since working with my very first client during graduate school, a young woman navigating pregnancy and everything that came with it – from childbirth anxiety to relationship challenges to the transition to parenthood. Working with clients over the years, I’ve come to understand that so many women are holding stories of their challenges with fertility, pregnancy, loss, childbirth, and parenting that often go unheard.
I was born and raised in Ohio. I earned my PhD in Clinical Psychology from The Ohio State University and completed residency and fellowship training at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago.
