Accepting New Clients
Dr. Liz Culnan, PhD
I’m a clinical health psychologist with advanced training in perinatal mental health, reproductive mental health, and behavioral sleep medicine.
My Approach
My approach to therapy is warm, supportive, and collaborative. I integrate evidence-based therapies including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy, Dialectical Behavior Therapy, Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, and Interpersonal Psychotherapy to tailor my approach to you.
During the first few therapy sessions, we’ll work together to explore your background and experiences and will work to set therapy goals that are meaningful to you. Our work together may include learning to mindfully process and get distance from challenging emotions and thoughts, increasing your self-compassion, improving your sleep, processing traumatic experiences, and re-engaging with your life in a meaningful way.
Areas of Expertise
Perinatal Mental Health
Pregnancy and postpartum bring so many changes—physically, emotionally, and in your relationships. It can be exciting, overwhelming, disorienting, and everything in between. I work with people through the major life shift of becoming a parent, whether it’s your first time or not. This time can stir up anxiety, depression, trauma, sleep issues, or just a deep sense of "I don’t feel like myself."
I’m trained in supporting people through all of it—the mental load, the identity shift, the emotional ups and downs—so you don’t have to figure it out alone.
Reproductive Mental Health
Trying to conceive can be one of the most vulnerable and emotional chapters of your life. If you're facing infertility, going through treatments, or grieving a pregnancy loss, it can feel like your body is betraying you—and that can be an incredibly lonely place to be. I have advanced training and years of experience supporting people through the emotional toll of fertility challenges, including treatment stress, loss, and the complicated grief that often comes with it.
I also support people living with conditions like PCOS (polycystic ovary syndrome), which can impact hormones, cycles, and fertility, and PMDD/PME (premenstrual dysphoric disorder and premenstrual exacerbation), which can cause intense mood shifts tied to your cycle. We’ll use science-based tools to help you feel more grounded, supported, and steady—both emotionally and physically.
Relationship Stress
Building a family and parenting impact even the strongest relationships. As partners take on new roles like patient, parent, caregiver, or supporter, the dynamic between often shifts in unexpected ways. These changes can intensify emotional responses and make it harder to communicate and cope effectively. I can help you navigate communication and other relationship stressors that you may be experiencing while building your family.
Behavioral Sleep Medicine
Sleep can become incredibly challenging during big life transitions—especially during fertility treatments, pregnancy, postpartum, or other times of hormonal change. It's common to lie awake at night and feel wired but exhausted. I have advanced training in behavioral sleep medicine, which means I can help with things like insomnia, nightmares, and sleep schedules that feel completely out of sync. Together, we’ll use proven tools to gently reset your sleep and help you get the rest you need to feel like yourself again.
More about Dr. Culnan
I've been deeply passionate about women’s mental health and reproductive mental health ever since my days in graduate school. There’s something incredibly meaningful about walking alongside people during some of the most vulnerable and transformative chapters of their lives—including the complexities of fertility and family building. Whether you're looking for tools, support, or simply someone who understands, it’s truly an honor to be part of your journey
My own path to parenthood helped solidify this passion. My pregnancy came with a complication that required frequent monitoring, all while I was working full-time. I gave birth during the height of the pandemic, which brought its own unique stressors. Like so many others, I faced the emotional challenge of weaning earlier than I’d hoped and needing to switch to formula—right in the middle of the nationwide formula shortage. Trying to balance all of that while caring for a newborn and continuing to work was incredibly tough, and it gave me a deeper appreciation for just how much support new parents truly need.
